"그 돈을 버는 데 딱 3년이 걸렸어요."

"It took me just three years to earn the money that bought it."

"당신이 돈을 상속받은 줄 알았어요."

"I thought you inherited your money."

"맞아요, 친구," 그가 무심코 말했다. "하지만 대부분을 대공황에서—전쟁의 공황에서 잃었어요."

"I did, old sport," he said automatically, "but I lost most of it in the big panic—the panic of the war."

그가 무슨 말을 하는지 자신도 거의 몰랐던 것 같다. 내가 어떤 일을 하느냐고 묻자, 그는 "그건 제 일이에요"라고 대답하고 나서야 그게 적절한 대답이 아니었음을 깨달았다.

I think he hardly knew what he was saying, for when I asked him what business he was in he answered: "That's my affair," before he realized that it wasn't an appropriate reply.

"아, 여러 가지 일을 해봤어요," 그가 말을 고쳤다. "약품 사업도 했고, 석유 사업도 했죠. 하지만 지금은 둘 다 하지 않아요."

"Oh, I've been in several things," he corrected himself. "I was in the drug business and then I was in the oil business. But I'm not in either one now."

그는 나를 좀 더 주의 깊게 바라보았다. "혹시 그날 밤 내가 제안한 것을 생각해보고 계셨던 건가요?"

He looked at me with more attention. "Do you mean you've been thinking over what I proposed the other night?"

내가 대답하기도 전에 데이지가 집에서 나왔고, 그녀의 드레스에 달린 두 줄의 황동 단추가 햇빛 속에서 빛났다.

Before I could answer, Daisy came out of the house and two rows of brass buttons on her dress gleamed in the sunlight.

"저기 저 엄청난 집이에요?" 그녀가 손가락으로 가리키며 외쳤다.

"That huge place there?" she cried pointing.

"마음에 드세요?"

"Do you like it?"

"너무 좋아요. 하지만 거기서 혼자 어떻게 사시는지 모르겠어요."

"I love it, but I don't see how you live there all alone."

"밤낮으로 항상 흥미로운 사람들로 가득 채워두죠. 흥미로운 일을 하는 사람들, 유명한 사람들로요."

"I keep it always full of interesting people, night and day. People who do interesting things. Celebrated people."

사운드를 따라 지름길로 가는 대신, 우리는 큰길로 내려가 큰 후문으로 들어갔다.

Instead of taking the shortcut along the Sound we went down to the road and entered by the big postern.
