The Curse of the Baskervilles

"제 주머니에 원고가 하나 있습니다," 제임스 모티머 박사가 말했다.

"I have in my pocket a manuscript," said Dr. James Mortimer.

"당신이 방에 들어올 때 보았습니다," 홈즈가 말했다.

"I observed it as you entered the room," said Holmes.

"오래된 원고군요."

"It is an old manuscript."

"18세기 초, 위조가 아니라면요."

"Early eighteenth century, unless it is a forgery."

"어떻게 그렇게 말씀하실 수 있습니까?"

"How can you say that, sir?"

"당신이 이야기하는 내내 그것의 1~2인치를 제가 살펴볼 수 있도록 내밀고 계셨습니다. 문서의 연대를 10년 이내로 맞추지 못한다면 형편없는 전문가겠지요. 혹시 제가 그 주제에 관해 쓴 작은 논문을 읽으셨을 수도 있겠군요. 저는 1730년으로 봅니다."

"You have presented an inch or two of it to my examination all the time that you have been talking. It would be a poor expert who could not give the date of a document within a decade or so. You may possibly have read my little monograph upon the subject. I put that at 1730."

"정확한 날짜는 1742년입니다." 모티머 박사는 가슴 주머니에서 그것을 꺼냈다.

"The exact date is 1742." Dr. Mortimer drew it from his breast-pocket.

"This family paper was committed to my care by Sir Charles Baskerville, whose sudden and tragic death some three months ago created so much excitement in Devonshire."

I may say that I was his personal friend as well as his medical attendant.

그는 강인한 정신력을 가진 분이었습니다. 예리하고 실용적이며, 저 자신만큼이나 상상력이 부족한 분이었지요.

He was a strong-minded man, sir, shrewd, practical, and as unimaginative as I am myself.

Yet he took this document very seriously, and his mind was prepared for just such an end as did eventually overtake him.

Holmes stretched out his hand for the manuscript and flattened it upon his knee.

"You will observe, Watson, the alternative use of the long s and the short. It is one of several indications which enabled me to fix the date."
