但纳特金跑到前面，一边笑一边喊道——

But Nutkin ran in front laughing, and shouting--

"胖墩儿躺在小溪里，\n脖子上围着白色床单，\n四十个医生和四十个工匠，\n都无法让胖墩儿恢复原状！"

"Humpty Dumpty lies in the beck, With a white counterpane round his neck, Forty doctors and forty wrights, Cannot put Humpty Dumpty to rights!"

这时候，老布朗先生对鸡蛋产生了兴趣；他睁开一只眼睛，又闭上了。

Now old Mr. Brown took an interest in eggs; he opened one eye and shut it again.

但他还是一言不发。

But still he did not speak.

纳特金变得越来越无礼——

Nutkin became more and more impertinent--

"老布先生！老布先生！\n希卡莫，哈卡莫，在国王的厨房门上；\n国王所有的马儿和所有的人，\n都无法把希卡莫、哈卡莫，\n从国王的厨房门上赶走。"

"Old Mr. B! Old Mr. B! Hickamore, Hackamore, on the King's kitchen door; All the King's horses, and all the King's men, Couldn't drive Hickamore, Hackamore, Off the King's kitchen door."

纳特金像一道阳光般上下跳舞；但老布朗还是什么也没说。

Nutkin danced up and down like a sunbeam; but still Old Brown said nothing at all.

纳特金又开始了——

Nutkin began again--

"阿瑟·奥鲍尔扯断了他的绳子，\n他咆哮着冲上陆地！\n苏格兰国王率领所有军队，\n也无法阻挡林中的阿瑟！"

"Arthur O'Bower has broken his band, He comes roaring up the land! The King of Scots with all his power, Cannot turn Arthur of the Bower!"

纳特金发出嗡嗡的声音，模仿风声，然后助跑一跃，直接跳到了老布朗的头上！……

Nutkin made a whirring noise to sound like the wind, and he took a running jump right onto the head of Old Brown!...

突然间，响起了一阵扑腾声、一阵乱撞声，还有一声响亮的"吱——"

Then all at once there was a flutterment and a scufflement and a loud "Squeak!"

其他的松鼠们慌慌张张地逃进了灌木丛。

The other squirrels scuttered away into the bushes.

当它们小心翼翼地回来，探头绕过大树张望时——老布朗正坐在他的门阶上，一动不动，双眼紧闭，仿佛什么事也没发生过。

When they came back very cautiously, peeping round the tree--there was Old Brown sitting on his door-step, quite still, with his eyes closed, as if nothing had happened.

但纳特金就在他的马甲口袋里！

But Nutkin was in his waistcoat pocket!

这看起来像是故事的结局；但其实不是。

This looks like the end of the story; but it isn't.
