門のところに二人の男と一人の女がいた。

There were two men and a woman at the gate.

「え？」と一人の男が振り返りながら言った。

"Eh?" said one of the men, turning.

「広場からの知らせは何かありますか？」と私は言った。

"What news from the common?" I said.

「あんた、さっきそこに行ってたんじゃないのか？」と男たちは尋ねた。

"Ain't yer just _been_ there?" asked the men.

「みんな、あの広場のことで正気を失ったみたいね」と門越しに女が言った。「いったい何なの？」

"People seem fair silly about the common," said the woman over the gate. "What's it all abart?"

「火星から来た者たちのことを聞いていないのですか？」と私は言った。「火星の生き物のことを？」

"Haven't you heard of the men from Mars?" said I; "the creatures from Mars?"

「もう十分聞いたわ」と門越しに女が言った。「ありがとう」。そして三人とも笑い出した。

"Quite enough," said the woman over the gate. "Thenks"; and all three of them laughed.

私は馬鹿にされたように感じ、腹が立った。話そうとしたが、自分が見たことを伝えられないとわかった。しどろもどろな言葉にまた笑われた。

I felt foolish and angry. I tried and found I could not tell them what I had seen. They laughed again at my broken sentences.

「まだまだ聞くことになりますよ」と私は言い、家へと向かった。

"You'll hear more yet," I said, and went on to my home.

私はひどくやつれた顔で、玄関口に立っていた妻を驚かせた。

I startled my wife at the doorway, so haggard was I.

私は食堂に入り、腰を下ろし、ワインを飲み、ようやく気持ちを落ち着けてから、見てきたことを妻に話した。

I went into the dining room, sat down, drank some wine, and so soon as I could collect myself sufficiently I told her the things I had seen.

夕食は冷たいものだったが、すでに出されており、私が話している間テーブルの上に手つかずのまま置かれていた。

The dinner, which was a cold one, had already been served, and remained neglected on the table while I told my story.

「一つだけ言っておこう」と私は、自分が引き起こした恐怖を和らげようとして言った。「あれは私が今まで見た中で最も動きの鈍い生き物だ。穴の中にとどまって近づく人を殺すことはできても、そこから出ることはできない。……でも、あの恐ろしさといったら！」

"There is one thing," I said, to allay the fears I had aroused; "they are the most sluggish things I ever saw crawl. They may keep the pit and kill people who come near them, but they cannot get out of it. . But the horror of them!"

「やめて、ねえ」と妻は眉をひそめ、私の手に自分の手を重ねて言った。

"Don't, dear!" said my wife, knitting her brows and putting her hand on mine.

「かわいそうなオグルヴィ！」

"Poor Ogilvy!"
