そこで私は妻の腕をつかみ、遠慮なく彼女を道へと連れ出した。

At that I gripped my wife's arm, and without ceremony ran her out into the road.

それから女中を呼び出し、彼女が騒いでいた箱は自分が上に取りに行くと告げた。

Then I fetched out the servant, telling her I would go upstairs myself for the box she was clamouring for.

「ここにはとても留まっていられない」と私は言った。

"We can't possibly stay here," I said;

私が言い終えると、共有地に向けて砲火が一瞬再開した。

and as I spoke the firing reopened for a moment upon the common.

「でも、どこへ行けばいいの？」と妻は恐怖に震えながら言った。

"But where are we to go?" said my wife in terror.

私は困惑しながら考えた。

I thought perplexed.

そしてレザーヘッドにいる彼女のいとこたちのことを思い出した。

Then I remembered her cousins at Leatherhead.

「レザーヘッド！」と私は突然の騒音に負けじと叫んだ。

"Leatherhead!" I shouted above the sudden noise.

彼女は私から目をそらし、坂の下を見た。

She looked away from me downhill.

人々が驚いた様子で家から出てきていた。

The people were coming out of their houses, astonished.

「どうやってレザーヘッドまで行くの？」と彼女は言った。

"How are we to get to Leatherhead?" she said.

坂の下では、一隊の騎兵隊が鉄道橋をくぐって進んでいくのが見えた。

Down the hill I saw a bevy of hussars ride under the railway bridge;

三騎がオリエンタル・カレッジの開いた門を駆け抜け、

three galloped through the open gates of the Oriental College;

他の二騎は馬を降り、家から家へと走り回り始めた。

two others dismounted, and began running from house to house.

木々の梢から立ち上る煙を透かして輝く太陽は血のように赤く見え、あたり一面に不気味な不慣れな光を投げかけていた。

The sun, shining through the smoke that drove up from the tops of the trees, seemed blood red, and threw an unfamiliar lurid light upon everything.

「ここで待っていなさい、ここは安全だ」と私は言い、すぐにスポッテッド・ドッグ亭へと向かって走り出した。

"Stop here," said I; "you are safe here"; and I started off at once for the Spotted Dog,

宿の主人が馬と犬車を持っていることを知っていたからだ。

for I knew the landlord had a horse and dog cart.

私が走ったのは、丘のこちら側にいる人々が皆すぐに動き出すだろうと気づいたからだ。

I ran, for I perceived that in a moment everyone upon this side of the hill would be moving.

主人は酒場にいて、自分の家の裏で何が起きているかまったく知らない様子だった。

I found him in his bar, quite unaware of what was going on behind his house.

一人の男が私に背を向けて立ち、主人に話しかけていた。

A man stood with his back to me, talking to him.
