そこで暗闇の中、一人の男が私にぶつかってきて、私はよろめき後ろへ押しやられた。

There in the darkness a man blundered into me and sent me reeling back.

男は恐怖の叫び声を上げ、横へ飛びのき、私が正気を取り戻して声をかける間もなく走り去ってしまった。

He gave a cry of terror, sprang sideways, and rushed on before I could gather my wits sufficiently to speak to him.

ちょうどこの場所では嵐の勢いがあまりにも激しく、丘を登るのは至難の業だった。

So heavy was the stress of the storm just at this place that I had the hardest task to win my way up the hill.

私は左手の柵に体を寄せ、その板の間を手探りで進んでいった。

I went close up to the fence on the left and worked my way along its palings.

頂上近くで何か柔らかいものに足を取られ、稲妻の閃光によって、足の間に黒い厚地の布の山と一足のブーツがあるのが見えた。

Near the top I stumbled upon something soft, and, by a flash of lightning, saw between my feet a heap of black broadcloth and a pair of boots.

Before I could distinguish clearly how the man lay, the flicker of light had passed.

私は彼の上に立って、次の閃光を待った。

I stood over him waiting for the next flash.

光が走ったとき、彼はがっしりした体格の男で、安物だが粗末でない服を着ていることがわかった。頭は体の下に折れ曲がり、まるで柵に激しく叩きつけられたかのように、柵のそばで体を縮めて倒れていた。

When it came, I saw that he was a sturdy man, cheaply but not shabbily dressed; his head was bent under his body, and he lay crumpled up close to the fence, as though he had been flung violently against it.

それまで一度も死体に触れたことのない者として自然に感じる嫌悪感を乗り越え、私はかがみ込んで彼を裏返し、心臓の鼓動を確かめようとした。

Overcoming the repugnance natural to one who had never before touched a dead body, I stooped and turned him over to feel for his heart.

彼はすでに完全に死んでいた。どうやら首の骨が折れていたようだった。

He was quite dead. Apparently his neck had been broken.

三度目の稲妻が走り、その顔が目の前に浮かび上がった。私は飛び上がって立ち上がった。

The lightning flashed for a third time, and his face leaped upon me. I sprang to my feet.

それは私が馬車を借りた、スポッテッド・ドッグ亭の亭主だった。

It was the landlord of the Spotted Dog, whose conveyance I had taken.

私は彼を恐る恐る跨ぎ越え、丘を登り続けた。

I stepped over him gingerly and pushed on up the hill.
