One of the men came running to my brother.

"Where is there any water?" he said. "He is dying fast, and very thirsty. It is Lord Garrick."

「ガリック卿！」と兄は言った。「大法官閣下ですか？」

"Lord Garrick!" said my brother; "the Chief Justice?"

「水は？」と男は言った。

"The water?" he said.

「どこかの家に水道の蛇口があるかもしれません」と兄は言った。「私たちには水がないのです。連れの者たちから離れるわけにはいきません」

"There may be a tap," said my brother, "in some of the houses. We have no water. I dare not leave my people."

男は角の家の門に向かって群衆をかき分けて進もうとした。

The man pushed against the crowd towards the gate of the corner house.

「進め！」と人々は彼を押しのけながら叫んだ。「奴らが来るぞ！進め！」

"Go on!" said the people, thrusting at him. "They are coming! Go on!"

そのとき、顎鬚を生やした鷲のような顔の男が小さな手提げ鞄を引きずっているのに兄の目が引きつけられた。鞄は兄が目にした瞬間に裂けて、地面に打ちつけられると一枚一枚の硬貨に砕け散るかのような大量のソブリン金貨をまき散らした。

Then my brother's attention was distracted by a bearded, eagle-faced man lugging a small handbag, which split even as my brother's eyes rested on it and disgorged a mass of sovereigns that seemed to break up into separate coins as it struck the ground.
