토토는 회색이 아니었습니다. 그는 작은 검은색 개로, 길고 부드러운 털과 귀여운 작은 코 양쪽에서 즐겁게 반짝이는 작고 검은 눈을 가지고 있었습니다.

Toto was not gray; he was a little black dog, with long silky hair and small black eyes that twinkled merrily on either side of his funny, wee nose.

토토는 하루 종일 놀았고, 도로시도 그와 함께 놀며 그를 매우 사랑했습니다.

Toto played all day long, and Dorothy played with him, and loved him dearly.

하지만 오늘은 그들이 놀고 있지 않았습니다.

Today, however, they were not playing.

헨리 삼촌은 문간에 앉아 평소보다 더욱 잿빛인 하늘을 불안하게 바라보았습니다.

Uncle Henry sat upon the doorstep and looked anxiously at the sky, which was even grayer than usual.

도로시는 토토를 팔에 안고 문 앞에 서서 하늘을 바라보았습니다.

Dorothy stood in the door with Toto in her arms, and looked at the sky too.

엠 아주머니는 설거지를 하고 있었습니다.

Aunt Em was washing the dishes.

멀리 북쪽에서 바람의 낮은 울부짖음이 들려왔고, 헨리 삼촌과 도로시는 다가오는 폭풍 앞에서 긴 풀이 파도처럼 휘어지는 것을 볼 수 있었습니다.

From the far north they heard a low wail of the wind, and Uncle Henry and Dorothy could see where the long grass bowed in waves before the coming storm.

이제 남쪽에서 공기를 가르는 날카로운 휘파람 소리가 들려왔고, 그쪽으로 눈을 돌리자 그 방향에서도 풀밭에 물결이 일렁이는 것이 보였습니다.

There now came a sharp whistling in the air from the south, and as they turned their eyes that way they saw ripples in the grass coming from that direction also.

갑자기 헨리 삼촌이 자리에서 일어섰습니다.

Suddenly Uncle Henry stood up.

"사이클론이 오고 있어, 엠," 그가 아내에게 소리쳤습니다. "내가 가서 가축들을 돌봐야겠어."

"There's a cyclone coming, Em," he called to his wife. "I'll go look after the stock."

그리고 그는 소와 말이 있는 헛간 쪽으로 달려갔습니다.

Then he ran toward the sheds where the cows and horses were kept.

엠 아주머니는 하던 일을 멈추고 문으로 나왔습니다.

Aunt Em dropped her work and came to the door.

한 번 쓱 훑어보는 것만으로도 바로 눈앞에 닥친 위험을 알 수 있었습니다.

One glance told her of the danger close at hand.

"빨리, 도로시!" 그녀가 소리쳤습니다. "지하실로 뛰어!"

"Quick, Dorothy!" she screamed. "Run for the cellar!"

토토가 도로시의 팔에서 뛰쳐나와 침대 밑으로 숨었고, 소녀는 그를 잡으러 달려갔습니다.

Toto jumped out of Dorothy's arms and hid under the bed, and the girl started to get him.
