लोक-कथाओं में से कोई भी कहानी कहने वालों की संपत्ति नहीं मानी जाती,

None of the folk-tales are considered as the property of the tellers,

लेकिन तीसरे विभाग की कहानियाँ ही सामान्य लोगों में अच्छी तरह जानी जाती हैं।

but only those of the third division are well known to the people in general.

पहले खंड की कहानियाँ शायद ही कभी सुनी जाती हैं, सिवाय सूखे मौसम के जब लोग गाँव के विभिन्न हिस्सों में अलाव के चारों ओर इकट्ठा होते हैं।

Those of the first section are seldom heard except during the dry season when the people gather around bonfires in various parts of the village.

To these go the men and women, the latter to spin cotton, the former to make fish nets or to repair their tools and weapons.

In such a gathering there are generally one or more persons who entertain their fellows with these tales.
