One Eye scooped out mouthfuls of the blood-soaked snow, and chewed and tasted and swallowed.
それが食欲をそそる風味となり、彼の空腹感はいっそう激しくなった。しかし彼は世慣れた老いた狼であり、用心を忘れるほど愚かではなかった。
This served as a relish, and his hunger increased mightily; but he was too old in the world to forget his caution.
彼は待った。横になって待ち続けた。その間もヤマアラシは歯をギリギリと鳴らし、うめき声やすすり泣き、そして時折鋭い小さな悲鳴を上げていた。
He waited. He lay down and waited, while the porcupine grated its teeth and uttered grunts and sobs and occasional sharp little squeals.
しばらくすると、片目はとげが垂れ下がり始め、激しい震えが起きていることに気づいた。
In a little while, One Eye noticed that the quills were drooping and that a great quivering had set up.
その震えは突然止まった。
The quivering came to an end suddenly.
長い歯が最後の抵抗とばかりにカチッと鳴った。
There was a final defiant clash of the long teeth.
それからすべてのとげがすっかり垂れ下がり、体は力を失ってもはや動かなくなった。
Then all the quills drooped quite down, and the body relaxed and moved no more.
片目は神経質に縮こまらせた前足で、ヤマアラシを体いっぱいに伸ばし、仰向けにひっくり返した。
With a nervous, shrinking paw, One Eye stretched out the porcupine to its full length and turned it over on its back.
何も起こらなかった。確かに死んでいた。
Nothing had happened. It was surely dead.
彼はしばらくじっとそれを見つめ、それから慎重に歯でくわえて川下へと歩き始めた。とげだらけの塊を踏まないよう頭を横に向けながら、ヤマアラシを半ば持ち上げ、半ば引きずりながら運んだ。
He studied it intently for a moment, then took a careful grip with his teeth and started off down the stream, partly carrying, partly dragging the porcupine, with head turned to the side so as to avoid stepping on the prickly mass.
ふと何かを思い出した彼は、荷物を下ろして、ライチョウを置いてきた場所まで小走りで戻った。
He recollected something, dropped the burden, and trotted back to where he had left the ptarmigan.
彼は一瞬も迷わなかった。何をすべきかははっきりとわかっていた。そしてライチョウをすぐさま食べることで、それを実行した。
He did not hesitate a moment. He knew clearly what was to be done, and this he did by promptly eating the ptarmigan.
それから彼は戻り、再び荷物を担ぎ上げた。
Then he returned and took up his burden.
