THE LONG TRAIL
それは空気の中にあった。ホワイト・ファングは、目に見える証拠が現れる前から、迫りくる災いを感じ取っていた。
It was in the air. White Fang sensed the coming calamity, even before there was tangible evidence of it.
何となく、変化が近づいているということが彼に伝わってきていた。
In vague ways it was borne in upon him that a change was impending.
どのようにして、なぜそう感じるのかは分からなかったが、それでも彼は神々自身から迫りくる出来事の予感を得ていた。
He knew not how nor why, yet he got his feel of the oncoming event from the gods themselves.
神々が気づいていない微妙なしぐさで、彼らは小屋の玄関先をうろつくオオカミ犬に自分たちの意図を漏らしていた。そのオオカミ犬は、小屋の中に入ることはなかったが、彼らの頭の中で何が起きているかを知っていた。
In ways subtler than they knew, they betrayed their intentions to the wolf-dog that haunted the cabin-stoop, and that, though he never came inside the cabin, knew what went on inside their brains.
「あれを聞いてみろよ！」とそり引き犬の御者が、ある夜の夕食時に声を上げた。
"Listen to that, will you!" the dog-musher exclaimed at supper one night.
ウィードン・スコットは耳を澄ました。ドアの向こうから、低く不安そうなうめき声が聞こえてきた。まるで息の下で泣きじゃくる声がやっと聞こえるようになったかのようだった。
Weedon Scott listened. Through the door came a low, anxious whine, like a sobbing under the breath that had just grown audible.
それからあの長い鼻をクンクンさせる音が続いた。ホワイト・ファングが、自分の神がまだ中にいて、謎めいた孤独な旅に出てしまったわけではないと確かめているのだった。
Then came the long sniff, as White Fang reassured himself that his god was still inside and had not yet taken himself off in mysterious and solitary flight.
「あのオオカミはあなたのことに気づいていると思うよ」と御者は言った。
"I do believe that wolf's on to you," the dog-musher said.
ウィードン・スコットは、言葉ではそれを打ち消しながらも、ほとんど懇願するような目で仲間の方を見た。
Weedon Scott looked across at his companion with eyes that almost pleaded, though this was given the lie by his words.
「カリフォルニアでオオカミをどうしろというんだ？」と彼は言った。
"What the devil can I do with a wolf in California?" he demanded.
「それが俺の言いたいことだよ」とマットは答えた。「カリフォルニアでオオカミをどうするつもりなんだ？」
"That's what I say," Matt answered. "What the devil can you do with a wolf in California?"
しかし、それではウィードン・スコットは満足しなかった。相手はどこか曖昧な態度で彼を値踏みしているように見えた。
But this did not satisfy Weedon Scott. The other seemed to be judging him in a non-committal sort of way.
「白人の犬では、あいつにはかなわないだろう」とスコットは続けた。
"White man's dogs would have no show against him," Scott went on.
