They had retreated back a few paces to avoid the salt showers.

لا يزال آدم يبدو مترددًا نوعًا ما في التخلي عن فكرة الإبحار، حين وصل إلى آذانهم صوت خافت لمدفع من عرض البحر.

Adam still seemed somewhat unwilling to give up putting to sea, when the dull sound of a gun from the offing reached their ears.

تلاه آخر ثم آخر.

Another and another followed.

قال أحد الرجال: "ثمة سفينة على رمال نورتون".

"There is a ship on Norton Sands," observed one of the men.

أجاب هاليبيرت: "تلك المدافع أبعد من ذلك".

"Those guns are too far off for that," answered Halliburt.

تبعهما آخران، ثم جاء دوي عدة مدافع أُطلقت معًا كالرعد.

Two others followed, and then came the thunder-sounding reports of several fired together.

صاح آدم: "كنت متأكدًا أن تلك لم تكن مدافع استغاثة. إنها تأتي من سفن في معركة، ثقوا بذلك؛ والخبر الذي سمعناه أمس صحيح، أن الفرنسيين والإنجليز عادوا إلى القتال".

"I was sure those were not guns of distress. They come from ships in action, depend on that; and the news is true we heard yesterday, that the French and English are at it again," exclaimed Adam.

"كنت أظن أننا لن نبقى أصدقاء للمسيو طويلًا".

"I thought we shouldn't long remain friends with the Mounsiers."

صاح أحد الصيادين: "حظًا موفقًا للسفن الإنجليزية!"

"Good luck be with the English ships!" cried one of the fishermen.

قال آدم بجدية: "آمين على ذلك! لكن عليهم أن يحذروا مما يفعلون، فمع الريح المتجهة مباشرة نحو الشاطئ، إن أسقطوا صواري بعضهم البعض، فمن المرجح أن يجرفهم كلاهم نحو رمال نورتون، وإن حدث ذلك فليرحمهم الله".

"Amen to that! but they must be careful what they are about, for with the wind dead on shore, if they knock away each other's spars, they are both more than likely to drift on Norton Sands, and if they do, the Lord have mercy on them," said Adam, solemnly.

"أيًّا كان الذي يحرز النصر، فسيكون في وضع سيئ، كما أخشى أن تكون ليلة عاصفة بعد كل شيء."

"Whichever gets the victory, they will be in a bad way, as I fear, after all, it will be a dirty night.

"لقد تحول الريح ثلاث درجات نحو الشرق منذ أن غادرت المنزل، وهو يهب بقوة ضعفين مما كان عليه قبل عشر دقائق."

The wind has shifted three points to the eastward since I left home, and it's blowing twice as hard as it did ten minutes ago.

"قد نكتفي بإرساء النانسي في مرساها، يا رفاق".

We may as well run the Nancy up to her moorings, lads."
