Vinegar-faced Joseph projected his head from a round window of the barn.
「何の用だ？」と彼は叫んだ。「旦那様は囲い場の下にいるぞ。話したいなら、納屋の端を回って行け。」
"What are ye for?" he shouted. "T' maister's down i' t' fowld. Go round by th' end o' t' laith, if ye went to spake to him."
「中に誰かいて、ドアを開けてくれる人はいないのか？」と私は大声で答えた。
"Is there nobody inside to open the door?" I hallooed, responsively.
「奥様しかおられん。でも、夜通しそんなにやかましくしても、開けてはくれんよ。」
"There's nobbut t' missis; and shoo'll not oppen 't an ye mak' yer flaysome dins till neeght."
「なぜ？ジョゼフ、私が誰か奥様に伝えてくれないのか？」
"Why? Cannot you tell her whom I am, eh, Joseph?"
「わしは知らん！そんなことに関わり合いたくないわ。」とその頭はつぶやきながら消えていった。
